Frequently Asked Questions
What is miraDry®?
The miraDry procedure is a safe, clinically proven, Health Canada cleared solution for significantly reducing underarm sweat. The procedure is quick, non-invasive, and performed at the Northern Ontario Surgical Centre.
How is miraDry different from other treatment options?
Options such as clinical strength antiperspirants or neuromodulator injections are only able to temporarily disable the sweat glands, requiring multiple treatments to maintain effectiveness. miraDry is the only non surgical options that is able to provide lasting results.
Are there side effects with miraDry?
Typically, patients report mild swelling and soreness. This should resolve within a few weeks. Some patients have reported temporary, altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms which gradually resolve. All potential side effects will be discussed during your consultation.
Does removing my underarm sweat glands cause increased sweating in other parts of my body?
When sweat glands are removed from a specific area, you simply cease to sweat in that area. The miraDry procedure does not cause compensatory sweating in other areas.
How does it work?
Controlled electromagnetic energy is applied to the area where the underarm sweat glands are located, which heats the sweat glands and permanently eliminates them.
How long does the procedure take?
Two, hour -long treatments are performed approximately 3 months apart to address medical hyperhidrosis, while often only one, hour-long treatment is necessary to address cosmetic sweating.
What should I expect after the procedure?
Patients report minimal to no downtime after the procedure. You may choose to use mild over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs for a few days. Most patients are able to return to normal activities or work directly following the procedure, and you can usually resume exercise within several days.
Can underarm sweat glands grow back?
No. The underarm sweat glands are unable to grow back or regenerate once they’ve been removed.
Can miraDry be performed in any other areas?
The miraDry procedure cannot be used to treat excessive sweating in other areas of the body, such as hands, feet, forehead, or knees.
What happens during the procedure?
A custom treatment plan is designed for each underarm, based on where your sweat glands are located. Prior to the procedure, your underarms are numbed using a local anesthetic. The miraDry handpiece is held up to the underarms in order to deliver the electromagnetic energy directly to the sweat glands.
Does the procedure hurt?
Patients report experiencing minimal pain during the procedure. You may experience some pressure and light pulling on the skin as well as warm sensations. There may be an occasional “hot spot” that lasts briefly but patients usually tolerate these very well.
What results can I expect from the miraDry procedure?
Most patients report a reduction in sweat immediately following their treatment and a dramatic, lasting reduction of their underarm sweat. In a recent clinical study, the average underarm sweat reduction was 82%.
Do I need my underarm sweat glands for anything?
While the body contains over four million sweat glands, approximately only 2% of them are located in your underarms. Eliminating this 2% does not affect your body’s ability to cool itself.
